Reception Theory

Reception theory focuses on what people see in the media, on the meanings they produce when they interpret media texts.

  • individual responses
  • decode meanings
  • context
  • gender
  • social status
  • how does it fit with everyday life
  • how do you watch/share music videos (and all other media)
  • mood
David Morley 1980 explored the ''Politics of the living room''
How does the media fit in with the pattern of your day?
Media can be a symbol of power in the family
E.g. who hold the tv remote
No phones at the dinner table

David Morley discovered 3 main types of reading for any media text

  1. Dominant (or hegemonic) reading. The reader shares the programmes code (its meaning system of values, attitudes, beliefs and assumptions) and accepts the preferred reading
  2. Negotiated reading. The reader partly shares the programmes code but modifies it in a way which reflects their position and interests
  3. Oppositional (counter-hegemonic) reader does not share the programmes code and rejects the preferred reading, bringing to bear an alternative frame of interpretation (E.g feminist reading of a 'Lads Mag'

Peer Review of Music Videos

Blink-182: First Date

The genre of Blink 182 is punk rock, they relate to this very well with the style of clothing they have gone for with the actors in the video, also with the hair style of the main character is very punk rock. Another thing they have done is because Blink 182s video for this song is very corny American style, so they have used a similar style of the main character being embarrassed a lot in their video which relates to the style very well. Another thing is the drummer is wearing army coloured shorts which is seen as a very American thing to wear so relates to where the music video came from in the first place.

As far as lyrics and visuals in the first minute the lyrics talk about stupid hair and as these lyrics are sang he messes up his hair. Also the lyrics say about not knowing what to wear, as these lyrics are being sang the main character tugs on his top, this shows a link to the lyrics. Half way through the music video the lyrics are 'I wish that it was only me and you' and this links to the visuals of the video as he accidently hits the other guys head with his hand. Talks about looking at him with those eyes when a shot of the girls eyes is on screen.

When it comes to music and visuals the hand movements with the guitar playing are good as they are in sync with the breaks between the guitar parts. Also with the drummer it is good and the hits on the drum kit are good as they are also in sync with the music.

Half way through the video they use the male gaze when the main character is with his friend in the park and sees the girl, yet again sticking to the corny American style of video with his mouth opening.

This video reminds me of the original video for this song with the corny American style. It follows many videos made in the USA from the 1970s with the way it is filmed and how the actions are made throughout the video. It appeals to males to connect with the video, from past experiences which the video may remind them of.

This video very much appeals towards a rock teenage group, judging by the fact that the actors in the video are all teenagers and going by the music that is being played. The gender representation is very much dominant towards the male side as the majority of people featured in the video are male as opposed to one girl. Then the fact that they used male gaze in it also shows it is aimed towards males.

Another point about this video is it very much follows the stereotypes of first dates, the guy drives, the guy walks the girl home, and it sticks to the stereotypes very well which makes it more like the original video for this song.

Another thing which makes this video such a male orientated video is the fact the most of the filming is done on the male and not the female, following the male about rather than the female and what the males reaction is towards everything. This is perhaps suggesting that men are more nervous about what they think to be a first date rather than a girl is.

Another point is the fact that the girl is with another guy at the end whilst wearing the main actors jumper which maybe suggests something about girls that they are maybe two faced or that they use guys for their items. It seems to have a negative view on girls, how instead of kissing him at the door she hugs him, and how she laughs when he hurts himself. It is in a corny American style but also has a negative view on women.
